Changing Careers in Mid-life
Most people feel stuck in their jobs,staring out the window thinking nothing ever changes.In fact, opportunities appear, and disappear,all the time. People who are looking out the window will see them. Susan Hansen of Warren, Vt., found a great new career because she was willing to follow a lead. Trained as a documentary filmmaker, she was on assignment for Vermont Public Radio and happened to meet a young man who confessed to a murder in Tunbridge a couple of years earlier. VPR aired the confession, and Nancy Stevens, a female private investigator, tracked Hansen down. She asked Hansen if she would consider being a private investigatorherself.
The notion had never occurred to her, but as she thought about it, something started to feel right. She was thirty-one and could see that being a PI would give her the flexibility to start a family. At one point in her life, her computer screen saver had the message, “Leap and the net will appear.” This seemed like the time to heed that advice.
